BENGALURU, 4 NOV

A drunken daredevilry cost a 32-year-old man his life after he allegedly sat on a box of firecrackers as his friends lit them during their Deepavali celebrations on the night of 1 November, police said on Monday.

The deceased is Shabarish. The group of seven had gathered at Konanakunte around 4pm on Friday to celebrate Deepavali. While bursting firecrackers in a drunken state, they told Shabarish they would gift him an autorickshaw if he sat on a box of firecrackers while others lit it.

Shabarish, an unemployed man and a resident of the same locality, accepted the challenge, police said.

A video footage of the act, which has gone viral on social media, shows a loud explosion and Shabarish falling to the ground. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries on Saturday, a senior police officer said.

The police have collected the CCTV footage of the act and based on the evidence, arrested all six people involved in the incident. The accused are Naveen, Dinakar, Satyavelu, Karthik, Satish and Santosh.

"A case of culpable homicide has been registered and the six members of the group involved in the incident have been arrested and produced before the court," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Bengaluru) Lokesh Jagalasar.

The family and relatives of the deceased have demanded severe punishment for the accused.  — Salar News
