Bengaluru 10 May

The Archdiocese of Bengaluru has called upon the faithful to offer special prayers this Sunday in response to two significant yet contrasting events — the joyous election of a new Pope and the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

In an official statement, Archbishop Dr Peter Machado expressed elation over the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, successor to Pope Francis. Describing it as a moment of “profound joy and renewed hope for the Universal Church,” he urged Catholics to give thanks and pray for the new pontiff's strength and guidance.

However, this celebration is shadowed by the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed multiple lives and left many injured. Archbishop Machado condemned the “brutal and cowardly” act, expressed solidarity with the victims' families, and called for prayers for the departed souls.

He also lauded the efforts of the armed forces and the central government, especially 'Operation Sindoor' launched by the Prime Minister to reinforce national security in the aftermath of the attack.

Acknowledging the gravity of both events, the Archbishop has requested that all parishes conduct special prayers after Mass on Sunday, 11 May, either during the service or within church premises.
