A police case has been registered regarding a fraudulent post on social media alleging an attack on the in-laws of Army officer Sofiya Qureshi. The complaint was filed by a police officer, leading to a case against Anis Uddin, an X account holder. He is charged under sections 353(2) (public mischief) and 192(A) (provocation with intent to cause a riot) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Two additional account holders, Khubaani and Drrumi, have also been implicated in the FIR for retweeting the misleading post, with their identities yet to be established. Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar Guled confirmed that “no such incident has taken place,” labelling the post as false.
Initial investigations suggest that Uddin resides in British Columbia, Canada, and the post likely originated from outside India. Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that action has been initiated, asserting that the post is an "insult to the state and the country."
As a precautionary measure, police have visited Colonel Qureshi’s in-laws' residence in Gokak taluk, where two officers have been stationed for security.
