A day after being sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case, suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna was allotted prisoner number 15528 at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, jail authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, spent his first night in jail visibly distressed and reportedly broke down during a medical check-up conducted by prison doctors on Saturday night. He remains under enhanced security in a high-security cell.

The 34-year-old former MP was convicted in one of four rape cases and has approached the High Court to challenge the verdict. The Special Court for MPs/MLAs, presided over by Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat, pronounced the sentence on Saturday, ordering life imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life and imposing a fine of Rs 11.5 lakh — Rs 11.25 lakh of which is to be paid to the victim.

The case involved a 48-year-old domestic worker employed at the Revanna family's farmhouse in Hassan district, who was raped twice in 2021 — once at the farmhouse and again at their Bengaluru residence. The acts were reportedly recorded on the accused’s mobile phone.

Prajwal was convicted under multiple IPC sections, including 376(2)(k), 376(2)(n), 354A, 354B, 354C, 506, and 201, as well as Section 66E of the IT Act. His sentence includes two terms of life imprisonment, rigorous imprisonment ranging from two to seven years for other charges, and fines totalling Rs 11.5 lakh.

Prison officials confirmed he must follow standard dress codes and wear the prescribed prison uniform.
