Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya on Sunday inspected the proposed Tunnel Road ramp site at Lalbagh Botanical Garden and strongly opposed acquiring any portion of the heritage garden.
Surya directed the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to study the project’s impact on the 300-million-year-old Lalbagh Rock formation, a National Geological Monument. He criticised B-SMILE, the government’s SPV for the project, for not conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or consulting the public and regular park users.
“The Karnataka Government is looking to take away Bengaluru’s most precious lung space to make a tunnel ramp. The project threatens Lalbagh Rock and plans a commercial complex with malls and eateries. Lalbagh belongs to the city, and people do not want any portion conceded for this vanity project,” Surya said.
He highlighted that tunnelling without proper geological or environmental assessment could cause fractures, hydrological disruptions, and ecosystem damage. Surya cited the Uttarakhand tunnel disaster as a warning and noted that Metro Phase 3A altered its alignment to protect Lalbagh Rock.
Surya urged a public geological impact study before any irreversible work begins, calling for full transparency and adherence to national EIA mandates.
