Bengaluru, 8 March
At least 100 citizens
gathered at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Saturday to mark International Women’s
Day by demanding stronger procedural safeguards for women approaching the
police and legal system after facing crimes such as harassment, stalking,
domestic violence and abuse.
The protest was
organised by Abbakka Brigade, the women’s wing of the Broseph Foundation, and
led by social activist Dushyant Dubey. Women, students, professionals and
social workers from across the City participated, highlighting the challenges
survivors often face while navigating the justice system.
Participants said
women frequently experience additional distress during the legal process,
including exposure of personal information, pressure to settle cases informally
and procedural practices that intensify trauma.
Protesters signed a
memorandum addressed to Home Minister G Parameshwara seeking a statewide
circular introducing safeguards for women complainants in police stations.
Key demands included
allowing alternative contact details in complaints, strict action against
officers who leak personal information, prioritising FIR registration in crimes
against women, preventing forced confrontations with accused persons and
ensuring adequate notice before women are summoned to police stations or
courts.
Organisers said the memorandum will be submitted to the Home Department calling for immediate action.
