Mumbai, 4 Nov

Prominent journalist Rana Ayyub and her father received death threats on 2 November after a caller from a Canadian number allegedly demanded that she publish a Washington Post op-ed glorifying Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

Ayyub said the caller, using the name Harry Shooter and a profile photo resembling jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, read out her home address and threatened to kill her father. She received multiple calls and WhatsApp messages within 20 minutes.

Ayyub alerted Navi Mumbai Police, who immediately deployed security at her residence and traced her travelling parents. No FIR has been filed yet. The Committee to Protect Journalists urged swift action.

Ayyub, often targeted online, including after her phone number was leaked in 2024, said the threats reflect ongoing attempts to intimidate journalists.
