Guwahati, 12  Dec

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg on Friday submitted an extensive chargesheet at the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Guwahati. The chargesheet, spanning more than 3,500 pages, was brought in four trunks, officials said, marking a significant development in the high-profile case.

The nine-member SIT, formed by the Assam government and led by Special DGP M P Gupta, arrived at the court in a convoy of six vehicles. Garg, one of the region’s most beloved cultural icons, died under mysterious circumstances on September 19 in Singapore while swimming in the sea. He was in the country to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival (NEIF).

Gupta had earlier confirmed that seven arrests have been made so far, including festival chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, and that over 300 witnesses have been examined during the course of the investigation.

In the recently concluded assembly session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated his strong stance, describing Garg’s death as "plain and simple murder", intensifying public demand for clarity and justice.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Force (SPF), which is conducting an independent investigation, stated that its preliminary findings “have not indicated any foul play” and that the probe may take up to three more months to conclude.

The case continues to draw widespread attention as fans await definitive answers surrounding the singer’s untimely death.
