The
Supreme Court has requested a report from the State government regarding actor
Darshan’s plea alleging he is being denied basic amenities in prison. The
actor, involved in the Renukaswamy murder case, claims he is not receiving
essentials such as food. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan
issued a notice to the state government.
Senior
advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Darshan, stated that the actor is being
denied basic amenities because the court had noted that no five-star treatment
should be given in jail. Rohatgi explained, “This is the case in which my
Lords were pleased to cancel the bail of this petitioner. Your Lordships made
an observation in the order that he should not get five-star treatment in jail.
Due to
that direction, I am not even given basic amenities.” The court had previously
cancelled Darshan’s bail on 14 August last year. Rohatgi added that Darshan,
kept in a quarantine cell with no light, is not receiving food. The court took
note of this and sought a report from the judge on the trial’s progress,
including witness examination and estimated conclusion time.
It also inquired whether Darshan is receiving the basic amenities entitled to an undertrial. The registry was instructed to receive reports within a week.
