Bengaluru, 2 June
The Karnataka government has announced the
statewide expansion of the "Gruha Arogya Yojane," which aims to
provide screening and management for 14 noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) for
individuals aged 30 and above in rural areas. Initially piloted in Kolar
district, the scheme was launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on 24 October
2024 and has demonstrated a successful community-based approach with
door-to-door screenings.
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated
that the extension has been made possible due to enhanced programme modifications.
The initial focus on six NCDs, including diabetes and hypertension, has now
expanded to cover a broader spectrum, including oral, breast, and cervical
cancers, along with conditions such as mental health disorders and chronic
kidney disease.
Minister Rao highlighted the importance of
early detection and prevention in reducing the prevalence of these diseases,
emphasising the potential for individuals to lead healthier lives. Under the
scheme, those diagnosed with an NCD will receive protocol medications free of
charge at nearby Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAM).
To effectively implement this programme, health personnel will play a crucial role. ASHA workers will mobilise communities, conduct household assessments, and raise awareness, while Community Health Officers will perform screenings and manage data entry. Medical officers will provide diagnoses, treatment, and ongoing management for affected individuals.
