Flood alert in Yadgir as water released from Narayanpur reservoir

The Karnataka Niravari Nigam Niyamita of Vijaypura (Water Corporation Ltd), as per the directions of Vijaypura Deputy Commissioner Bubaalan had released water from the Alamatti reservoir to Narayanpur reservoir to maintain water levels.

Residents on the banks of the Krishna river in Yadgir were asked to be on high alert as a heavy sum of 95,000 cusecs of water was released from Narayanpur reservoir on Saturday evening.

The Karnataka Niravari Nigam Niyamita of Vijaypura (Water Corporation Ltd), as per the directions of Vijaypura Deputy Commissioner Bubaalan had released water from the Alamatti reservoir to Narayanpur reservoir to maintain water levels.

The water level in Krishna river Alamatti dam was increasing due to heavy rains in south Maharashtra.

Yadagiri DC Sushila said water was being released from the Narayanpur reservoir in phases to avoid flash floods. The water level in the dam was 491.43meters with 26.66tmcft storage at 5pm on Saturday.

Similarly, water from the Rakkaskop reservoir in Belagavi was being released to Markandeya river, owing to the continuous downpour from about a week. Following the release, the river increased by about a kilometre in width, ruining crops grown in the Belagavi taluk

"Not only vegetables but also maize and commercial crop sugarcane will be spoiled if the rain continues for another 2-3 days," said Karnataka Rajya Raira Sangh and Hasiru Sene Belagavi taluk President Appasaheb Desai.

Belagavi City Corporation Commissioner Shubha B said that the reservoir reached its brims in the first week of July due to the rains in the Maharashtrian Western Ghats and Belagavi.

"There will be no shortage of water to Belagavi till June 2026 if the reservoir fills in the monsoon," Shubha B said.
