MANGALURU, 28 JULY

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high tide warning of over 4m height for the State’s coastal districts – Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada – until 29 July. The department also said that there would be heavy rains along the coast as well as Malnad districts – Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu –  until 3 August, updating the previous announcement which forecast heavy downpour until 28 July.

Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner Rashmi Priya said the district administration has barred fishermen from entering the sea and warned people against going near the shores. "Coastal watchers have been deployed along the shores to prevent fishermen and tourists from going near the sea for any reason," Priya said.

Many educational institutions up to the 2nd Pre-University (PUC) also declared a holiday on Monday due to continuous rains.

FOUR BRIDGES SUBMERGED IN BELAGAVI

For the fourth time this monsoon, 16 villages in Chikkodi taluk of Belagavi district have been cut off as four bridges across the Krishna river were submerged due to rising water levels. Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Roshan told news persons that the river Krishna and its sub river Doodhaganga were swelling due to the flow to the river from Maharashtra.

“The Krishna is rising not due to local rains, but due to inflows from Maharashtra,” he said.

At 8am on Monday, inflow into the Krishna was measured at 30,000 cusecs — the same as Saturday and Sunday. The Doodhaganga river in Nippani taluk has also overflowed.

The district administration has urged people to stay away from the riverbanks, even for routine tasks like watering livestock.
