Skeletal remains have been discovered in Dharmasthala. This is the first such discovery, after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, reportedly found nothing at the first five sites near the Netravathi river.
Bones from two skeletons were reportedly recovered. However, the complete bodies have not yet been recovered — only certain body parts, including skull fragments, have been found. Excavation is continuing deeper in search of the remaining parts. Officers have recovered bones from the pit. As per procedure, the bones found at the 6th point will be sent for forensic examination (FSL testing).
The case stems from the testimony of a former sanitation worker, who alleged that between 1995 and 2014, he buried “hundreds” of bodies in Dharmasthala, some of which, he claimed, showed signs of sexual violence.
The accused had provided information about 13 locations.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said that senior IPS officer Pronab Mohanty, who is heading the SIT, will be replaced if he goes on central government duty.
Earlier, Home Minister G Parameshwara said the government has not taken any decision yet on Mohanty.
There has been speculation that Mohanty, Director General of Police (Internal Security Division), who has found a place in the list of empanelment of Director General-rank officers to serve in the Union government, released by the Centre, will be replaced as the SIT Chief.
