BELAGAVI, 25 AUG
Government-run Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) landed in more trouble after its doctors removed the lower intestine of a man instead of a tumour from his stomach.
The patient, Mahesh Madar, was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain on 20 June. Doctors operated on him the same day, and he was discharged a few days later.
However, even after the operation, the pain in his abdomen did not subside. He then approached a private hospital in Belagavi, where medical tests showed his lower intestine had been removed instead of the tumour.
Mahesh’s tumour was later removed in the KLES Hospital, for which his family had to incur a medical expenditure of Rs 20 lakh.
He now suffers from a lot of physical pain and discomfort.
BIMS director Ashok Kumar Shetty said that a probe is being conducted into the incident and a report would be sent to the Health and Medical Education Department.
Several people and organisations had protested against the BIMS for 20 maternal deaths, alleging negligence of the medical staff of the hospital earlier this year.
