Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that the government would not back down from attempting to acquire land for the Bidadi Township project, despite stiff opposition and protests from farmers.

“A loan of 27,000 crore rupees has been taken for the Bidadi Township project, and there is no question of abandoning the project,” he said on Thursday.

He noted that farmers had voluntarily given 960 acres of land for the project. The project requires land acquisition of 9,600 acres.  However, Shivakumar remained optimistic.

“70 per cent of the people have expressed approval for this project, while only 30 per cent have not given their consent,” he noted.

“I have assured that farmers who will lose their property due to this project will receive two to three times more compensation,” he said. He added that the government is giving famers the option to choose other land, such as in commercial or residential areas.

“I will try to assist the farmers within the legal framework.,”Shivakumar added.
