Karnataka HC refuses to lift stay order on movie ticket prices

Notably, multi-screen cinemas with premium facilities of 75 seats or less are exempted from the maximum ticket price limit of Rs 200.

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday refused to stay a single judge order that had stayed the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules 2025 which caps movie ticket prices at Rs 200.

 

The State government on 12 September had issued a notification capping movie ticket prices at Rs 200 across all theatres, including multiplexes.

 

On 23 September, a single judge stayed the cap until further orders, based on a plea moved by the Multiplex Association of India and other entities.

 

The vacation bench of Justice Suraj Govindaraj and Justice Rajesh Rai K expanded the interim order stating, “The interest of justice would be served by expanding the interim order to protect the interest of all concerned.”

 

It directed the Multiplex Association of India to maintain the accounts of collection from ticket sales and submit them to the Government before the 15 October until the court passes a final ruling, Livelaw reported.

 

Notably, multi-screen cinemas with premium facilities of 75 seats or less are exempted from the maximum ticket price limit of Rs 200.
