A police officer sustained serious head injuries after being attacked during a Ganesha idol immersion procession in Bhadravathi town on Sunday night.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Yallappa of the Paper Town Police Station was assaulted while trying to control a violent clash between two rival groups of youths. According to police, the ASI was struck from behind with a wooden plank while attempting to pacify the crowd, resulting in severe injuries to the back of his head.

The confrontation reportedly stemmed from a long-standing rivalry between the two groups. Amid the chaos, former Gram Panchayat president Krishnegowda and his wife were also assaulted.

ASI Yallappa received initial treatment at Bhadravathi Taluk Hospital and was later shifted to a private hospital in Shivamogga for specialised care.
