Belagavi, 16 Oct

The State government has prevented the Maharashtra-based seer Adrushya Kadsiddheshwar Swamiji from entering Vijayapura district for two months following his controversial remarks against Lingayat seers and devotees.

District Commissioner Dr Anand K issued an order prohibiting the Kolhapur-based Kaneri Kadasiddeshwar Mutt seer's entry into Vijayapura district from 16 October to 16 December, based on a report submitted by the District Superintendent of Police. The report warned that the seer’s visit could lead to disturbances in law and order.

The Swamiji was scheduled to visit Basavan Bagewadi in Vijayapura district on 16 and 17 October.

The controversy erupted after Kadsiddheshwar Swamiji’s – who is from the Vokkalinga community - recent speech at Beelur village in Jath taluk, Maharashtra, where he allegedly criticised the “Chief Minister-favoured federation of Lingayat seers,” calling it a “drama troupe.” He further made disparaging remarks urging people to “stop visiting temples, throw home idols into rivers, drink liquor in hotels, eat meat and enjoy themselves.”

The comments triggered outrage among Lingayat seers and Basava devotees, who protested, burned effigies, and demanded action against the Swamiji.

Officials clarified that the ban is temporary and preventive in nature.

Strong reactions also poured in from the Lingayat community in north Karnataka.

Basavaraj Rotti, president of the Universal Lingayat Mahasabha (Belagavi district unit), said the Kaneri Mutt seer used “unconstitutional and derogatory” language against over 300 mathadishas who attended the recent Basava Sanskriti Abhiyan convention.

The organisation announced a rally in Belagavi on Friday, seeking a State-wide ban on the seer.
