  • The SIT was formed after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's vote chori allegations.

Kalaburagi, 18 Oct

Heaps of burnt voter records were discovered near former BJP MLA Subhash Guttedar’s residence in Aland, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) intensified its probe into alleged voter fraud linked to the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.

The SIT, formed following allegations by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of large-scale “vote theft,” has been camped in Kalaburagi for several days conducting raids and verification drives. Acting on credible leads, the team seized thousands of voter ID cards, 15 mobile phones, and seven laptops from the residence of a man named Akram near Hagaraga Cross.

In a significant development, the SIT raided Guttedar’s home in Gubbi Colony, examining election documents and electronic devices. Workers were reportedly seen burning voter-related papers in front of his residence and dumping charred material into a nearby stream, allegedly attempting to destroy evidence. Some burnt records were also recovered from Shakhapur Lake after Congress leaders alerted officials.

Guttedar dismissed suspicions, blaming his housekeeping staff for burning the records during a festival cleanliness drive. “If we had malicious intentions, why burn it right outside our house?” he told reporters.

The probe follows a February 2023 complaint alleging about 6,000 names were removed from the Aland voter list using fake Form-7 applications, primarily targeting Congress supporters. Congress MLA BR Patil credited timely detection of the fraud for his electoral victory over Guttedar. The SIT continues its investigation into the alleged voter deletion case.
