A mob allegedly cut a woman’s hair, tore her clothes and forcibly applied lime on her head and threw chili powder on her in Chamanal Tanda of Shahapur taluk in Yadgir district. The miscreants, which included some of her extended family, claimed that the woman was having an affair with her son-in-law.

The Kembhavi police have arrested two people while more than 11 people have been booked.

On the night of 16 October, around 8 pm, while the victim - Gangabai Shankar Chinnarathod -  was at home with her husband and nephew, the group came to the house armed with iron rods. They physically and verbally abused her.

They allegedly cut her hair with scissors, applied lime on her head, tore her clothes, and physically attacked her. When she tried to escape, they threw chili powder on her. Her husband and nephew shouted for help, and with the assistance of local residents, Chinnarathod managed to escape.

The survivor lodged a complaint alleging life threats against 11 people, including 6 women.

The woman said in her complaint that she would often visit her aunt’s house due to health issues. Her son-in-law, Anil Ramu Rathod, would often take her there.

However, the accused believing something else was afoot insulted her, saying, “You have brought disgrace by running away with your son-in-law.”

Main accused Vijaykumar Kishan Rathod (a rowdy-sheeter) and about ten others are suspected to be hiding in Mumbai and Pune, according to police.
