Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot on Saturday highlighted the role of music in emotional, cognitive development physical wellbeing of the people.


Music has the power to calm the conflicts of the mind, transform violence into compassion, and unite humanity, Gehlot said while presiding over the 10th Convocation of the Karnataka State Dr Gangubai Hangal University of Music and Performing Arts in the city.


“Our Vedas declare ‘Nadosmi Param Brahma’ — Sound is the Supreme Soul. This divine sound awakens compassion, beauty and love within the human spirit.”


He noted that in today’s age of rapid digital and technological transformation, artists serve as bridges of empathy and cultural communication. 


The Governor said that the institution is named after the legendary Hindustani classical vocalist Gangubai Hangal, who played a pioneering role in giving new identity to Khayal singing. 


Honorary Doctorate degrees were also conferred upon theatre personality H Janardhana, music exponent BR Seshadri Iyengar and folklorist GM Sivaprasad for their outstanding contributions to society. The Governor congratulated them. 


Seven scholars and five toppers of the university received gold medals and cash rewards.
