Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday accused the BJP of making provocative speeches, linking the party’s opposition to the newly passed Hate Speech and Hate Crimes Prevention Bill, 2025, to its political conduct.

Speaking to reporters after the Bill was cleared in both Houses of the State legislature, Siddaramaiah questioned whether provocative speeches could help maintain peace in society. He said such speeches were the reason the BJP was opposing the legislation.

The Chief Minister said the law aims to curb acts that promote enmity, hatred and disharmony among individuals and communities.

The Bill was taken up for discussion during the Assembly session in Belagavi, where Home Minister G Parameshwara outlined the need for clearly defining hate speech and hate crimes within a legal framework.

Explaining its provisions, Parameshwara said hate crimes target specific communities and require precise legal definitions to ensure effective action. Under the law, offenders can face imprisonment ranging from one to seven years, along with a fine of ₹50,000. Repeat offences will attract enhanced punishment, including a minimum of two years’ imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh.

Parameshwara rejected allegations that the Bill was aimed at any particular individual or party, stating that it would apply to anyone indulging in hate speech and was introduced in line with Supreme Court directives to curb such offences.
