Parents chain daughter in house for 10 years over ‘black magic’ in Karnataka
The incident highlights the persistence of superstition and poor mental health awareness in rural communities.

Belagavi, 30 March
A couple in Belagavi district was found to have kept their daughter chained inside their house for nearly a decade, citing fears of “black magic” (locally referred to as “baanamathi”).
The incident underscores the persistence of superstition
despite some social and educational progress.
The
incident occurred in the jurisdiction of the Kagawad police station and came to
light on Sunday.
The
victim, Sneha, was a college-going student about 10 years ago when she began
exhibiting unusual behaviour, including erratic movements and dancing, the
family said, according to Belagavi SP. She is now believed to be around her 30s.
Believing
that she had been affected by black magic, the parents sought the advice of a self-styled godman, who allegedly told them that removing the curse would cost
lakhs of rupees.
Unable to
afford the suggested remedy, the family chose to confine her at home.
The
father, Sidrayya, claimed that whenever the chains were removed, Sneha would
turn violent—throwing stones, hitting others, and attempting to run
away—leaving them with no option but to restrain her.
However, the incident has raised serious concerns about the continued prevalence of blind beliefs and the lack of mental health awareness in rural areas.
Experts have said that such behaviour may be indicative of underlying psychological conditions that require medical intervention.
