People protesting KBG’s pourakarmika remarks detained

Several people were allegedly detained by Bengaluru police on Thursday during their protest against Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda’s remarks on pourakarmkikas (civic workers).

Gowda, earlier in the week, had said that 30 per cent of pourakarmikas were absent from duty on a daily basis and said that the government would not regularise their work, a significant blow to the civic workers’ longstanding demand.

The protest on Thursday was held near Vidhana Soudha. They were demanding an unconditional apology from Gowda, alleging that he had insulted pourakarmikas, most of whom are from the Dalit community.
