Truck runs over Ganesha procession in Hassan: 8 killed, several critical

Eight people were killed in a road incident in Hassan, Karnataka on Friday night when a speeding truck rammed into a group of people taking part in the Lord Ganesha idol immersion procession. 


In the accident took place near Mosalehosahalli, eight people were have been killed while more than 20 others sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. 


The death toll from the accident is feared to rise as several of them are in critical condition.  


The canter vehicle being driven from Maharashtra was speeding and initially hit a two-wheeler at NH 373’s four way lane. 


It then plunged into hundreds of people taking part in the procession, killing five on the spot. Three more died while undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals and at least 10 others remain critical. 


Expressing his condolences over the tragic accident, Union Minister & JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy asked the Karnataka government to ensure that proper medical treatment is provided for the injured.


“I am deeply shocked by the horrific accident during the Ganesh immersion procession at Mosalehosahalli in Hassan taluk, where several people lost their lives and more than 20 sustained serious injuries. It is extremely painful that devotees lost their lives after being run over by the truck during the procession,” he told Salar News. 


“I also pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured. The state government must ensure the free treatment for them,” he added.

Revanna alleged police negligence in the incident and held the State government accountable, demanding that all steps are taken to provide Rs 15 lakh compensation to families of the deceased.
