  • Mukkunda villagers say that they have appealed several times to the government.

Raichur, 7 Aug

For the residents of Mukkunda village in the taluk, performing last rites has become a major challenge when the river is flowing. They have to carry bodies across a river to reach their cremation ground.

Most recently, a video circulating on social media shows villagers carrying the body of a deceased elderly woman on a makeshift stretcher (harigolu) and swim across the river

Villagers said that they have appealed multiple times to the government, demanding well-maintained grounds to the cremation ground, and to create alternative facilities, but no action has been taken.

It is a recurring problem: whenever water is released from the Tungabhadra reservoir into the river, a harigolu becomes necessary to reach the cremation ground situated on an island.

Recently, Tungabhadra Dam released a substantial amount of water, approximately 1 lakh cusecs, to maintain balance and prevent further damage to the dam. This has contributed to the flooding in surrounding areas.

“We have been facing difficulties in performing cremations for decades. The government is ignoring our pleas. The authorities must immediately resolve this issue faced by the villagers,” Chandrashekhara Reddy, a resident of Mukkunda, said.

Locals Nagaraj Devaramani and Rudramunitata urged MLA and Tahsildar Hampanagouda Badarli to take appropriate action.

“The village survey number 238/2 has 1.3 acres of land reserved for a cremation ground. Another 2-acre plot has also been identified. However, due to vastu, villagers are unwilling to use that cremation ground,” responded Tahsildar Arun H Desai.
